چکیده

We nd that Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at the 3B catalog are correlated (at 95% con dence level) with Abell clusters. This is the rst known correlation of GRBs with any other astronomical population. It con rms the cosmological origin of GRBs. Comparison of the rich clusters autocorrelation with the cross-correlation found here suggests that 26 15 % of an accurate ( < 2:3 ) position GRBs sub-sample members are located within 600 h Mpc.

Mimicking within Euclidean Space a Cosmological Time Dilation of Gamma-Ray Burst Durations

If gamma-ray burst sources are cosmological in origin, then the time dilation at large z can correlate a burst's duration with its peak ux. Detection of this eeect is thought by many to be strong evidence for a cosmological burst origin. In this letter I show that an apparent time distortion|either a dilation or contraction|is generally expected for an ensemble of bursts that is spatially limit...

“No High Energy Emission” GRB Class Is Attributable to Brightness Bias

The inhomogeneous brightness distribution of BATSE detected gamma-ray bursts has been considered strong evidence for their cosmological origin. However, subclasses of gamma-ray bursts have been shown to have significantly more homogeneous brightness distributions. Pendleton et al. (1997) have found such a result for gamma-ray bursts with no detectable emission at energies >300 keV. Accordingly,...

On the Origin of Gamma Ray Bursts

relativistic flows by star-light in dense stellar regions followed by emission of decay/recombination photons, which are beamed and boosted to γ ray energies in the observer frame, produce gamma ray bursts (GRBs). We show that this overlooked mechanism is able to convert efficiently baryonic kinetic energy release in merger or accretion induced collapse of neutron stars into cosmological GRBs a...

Cosmological Time Dilation in Gamma Ray Bursts?

Norris et al. (1994) report that the temporal structure of faint gamma ray bursts is longer than that of bright bursts, as expected for time dilation in the cosmological models of burst origin. I show that the observed trends can easily be produced by a burst luminosity function and thus may not result from cosmological effects. A cosmological signature may be present, but the tests Norris et a...

Are Gamma-Ray Bursts Signals of Supermassive Black Hole Formation?

The formation of supermassive black holes through the gravitational collapse of supermassive objects (M ∼> 5× 104 M ) has been proposed as a source of cosmological γ-ray bursts. The major advantage of this model is that such collapses are far more energetic than stellar-remnant mergers. The major drawback of this idea is the severe baryon loading problem in one-dimensional models. We can show t...
